October is here! The weather has now dropped to the high 70s F (around 24C)—big news for Southern California/Claremont! As fall kicks into full swing, the HEART lab has been hard at work!
Starting off the month on a high note, our very own Jaymes Rombaoa is now…

DR. Jaymes Rombaoa!
First selfie as a doctor, kind of nervous…
Earlier this month, Jaymes successfully defended his dissertation, “Exploring the Dynamic Factors of Flourishing for College-Attending and Non-College-Attending Emerging Adults.” His month-long longitudinal study followed over 70 young adults aged 18–25, intentionally including both college-attending and non-college-attending individuals to better understand flourishing across diverse experiences of emerging adulthood.
Combining daily diaries, ecological momentary assessments, and wearable technology, Jaymes used dynamic network models to examine how elements of well-being connect and change over time. His work integrated a bottom-up approach grounded in participants’ daily narratives with a top-down approach using repeated assessments of flourishing and wearable health data.
Congratulations, Dr. Rombaoa! He is now working as a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow for the Love Project! We’re excited to see you jumpstart your research career and flourish along the way!

This month's exciting work continued as Dr. Saida Heshmati presented at The Love Consortium (TLC) online conference on October 13th. TLC is a community of researchers who are connected by a value for scientific innovation and themes of social connection in their work. In her conference talk, titled “Shared cultural beliefs on love in everyday life: Insights from Spain and Brazil,” Dr. Heshmati presented findings from the study in Spain (read the published article here) as well as the study in Brazil (manuscript in progress). It was wonderful connecting (virtually) with like-minded colleagues and researchers in the field of love science! 🫶

In addition to the HEART lab’s impressive work this month, the lab has also had fun. For the October blog, we can’t forget about 🎃 👻 !
To celebrate accordingly, the lab had a joint Halloween party with Dr. Jessica Stern’s FAM Lab at Pomona College and Dr. Stacey N. Doan’s Applied Mind and Health (AMH) Lab at the Berger Institute at Claremont McKenna College. It was great to chat with our colleagues to catch up and hear about the other exciting research going on at the 7Cs, and of course, opportunities to meet up face-to-face within the lab are always appreciated as well!
